Do you need to do fancy functional exercises?
Every time you go on YouTube these days, it seems like there’s a fitness specialist showing us a brand new super impossible exercise. They also continue on to shame us into believing that this functional specialty is an absolute must for our current Fitness routine.
So do we really need to do these fancy functional exercises?
The short answer is no.
The long answer is also probably no.
The end all be all of exercise is that it gets the body moving and working well so even bicep curls have a positive effect on your health and fitness. It’s always bothered me when somebody shames someone for doing exercise. This is not necessary and in reality, any exercise that doesn’t injure and is generally safe, should be advocated.
There was an exercise called a Turkish Get Up presented to the world a few years ago and though it’s an interesting functional exercise, it’s not necessary for everyone’s Fitness routine.
This movement can be very challenging and I’ve done wrong, it may cause injury and therefore it should be left to those that are much more advanced when it comes to Fitness training.
Regular exercises are fine if not better
Regular exercises like:
- Squats
- Lunges
- Push ups & Pull ups
- Hip lifts
- Seated rows
- Jumping jacks
- High knees
- Crunches
- Planks
All of the above exercises are great exercises and they’re actually really beneficial too. Furthermore, they’re quite safe and fundamental as well. I still incorporate many of them in the routines of my clients and my own routine too!

As personal trainers, it’s our goal to give you exercises that work well for you and match the point you’re currently at. we don’t want to give you exercises that are too easy or advanced. we want to meet you right in the middle and give you exactly what you need. this is the essence of good personal training programming.
So next time you feel like you can’t do a fancy functional exercise, you need not worry because it’s not necessary and in most cases, you can stick to the classic exercises that are simple to do, safe for most people and get most of us great results out of our health and fitness weight training program.
